Gerbil Food

In addition to our high-quality gerbil food, there are some foods that you can give to your gerbil in very small amounts. This includes small pieces of fresh vegetables like carrots, broccoli, or cucumbers. They may also like to gnaw on seeds and nuts, although try to avoid sunflower seeds as they are fatty and opt for pumpkin seeds instead!

As a general rule, good quality gerbil food, like what you’ll find here at Burgess, should be given to your gerbil once a day. Usually, a tablespoon of specially formulated nuggets will do the trick. We’d recommend scattering their food around their accommodation to encourage natural foraging behaviour! The best gerbil food is one where every single pellet contains all the essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that your gerbil needs. Look for foods with high-quality ingredients that are easy for your gerbil to digest. It should also be the right shape and texture to encourage your gerbil to gnaw and chew, which will help keep their teeth healthy.

Giving your gerbil a little treat every now and then is a wonderful way to add variety to their diet and build a special bond with them. PDSA recommends the following for gerbils: Small slices or cubes of carrots, spinach, sweet peppers, or cabbage, a small handful of fresh herbs such as basil, sage, and parsley, and a sliver of fruit such as apples, pears, peaches, and melons.

While hay isn’t the primary source of food for gerbils in the way it is for rabbits & guinea pigs, it’s still a great addition to their environment and diet. Gerbils are natural burrowers, and so a good layer of hay mixed in with their bedding will provide better structure for their tunnels.
