Healthy Treats for Rabbits

While we don’t mean to be biased, we truly believe that our premium Excel range of rabbit treats is the best. Here at Burgess, we continuously work with leaders in small animal welfare, behaviour and health to ensure we are at the front of small animal nutrition. And, all of our treats are made with 100% natural ingredients, are high in fibre, and contain no artificial colours or flavours.

Rabbit treats and snacks should be provided only occasionally – they’re treats after all! The best way to ensure your rabbit is getting all the nutrition and fibre they need is by following the Excel Rabbit Feeding Plan, which has been developed in conjunction with one of the world’s leading small animal vets.

 

In contrast to the above, there are some fresh foods that should be avoided as they aren’t very healthy and could cause potential health issues if consumed in large quantities. They include: 

• Lettuce – Some types of lettuce contain lactucarium, which can be harmful in large quantities 
• Carrots – carrots are actually high in sugar. However, fresh leafy green carrot tops make a great treat! 
• Chard – It’s a leafy green that rabbits can’t tolerate 
• Avocado – It’s fatty and shouldn’t be included in your rabbit’s diet 
• Rhubarb – This common garden plant can be poisonous to animals 
• Grass cuttings – While fresh grass is encouraged to forage on, grass cuttings can be harmful as they quickly start to ferment

 

Each day, also provide a small handful of rabbit-safe fresh greens and plenty of fresh water. This will provide your buns with the perfect diet and an ideal daily balance of fibre and nutrition.
